Air Ring
An Air Ring is a critical component in a blown film extrusion line, designed to cool the plastic bubble as it exits the die. How Air Rings Work
The air ring encircles the extruded plastic bubble just as it emerges from the circular die. It blows cool air onto the hot film to solidify it as the film is drawn upward by the take-off unit. The design of the air ring is crucial because it must deliver a consistent flow of air across the entire circumference of the bubble to cool it evenly. Uneven cooling can lead to variations in film thickness and other quality defects.
Types of Air Rings

Single Lip Air Rings: Feature a single air outlet and are commonly used for less critical applications or where cost is a significant consideration. They provide a basic level of cooling efficiency and are simpler in design.

Dual Lip Air Rings: Have two separate airflow channels, allowing for finer control over the cooling process. The first lip cools the immediate area exiting the die, while the second lip further down provides additional cooling and control. This type is preferred for higher-quality film production, offering better gauge control and cooling efficiency.
